“Everybody wants to understand art. Why not attempt to understand the song of a bird?…people who attempt to explain pictures are generally barking up the wrong tree.” – Pablo Picasso. What Picasso says about understanding art is extremely related to the way we approach Large Abstract Canvas Art. Lots of people feel that abstract paintings should have a particular concept of some sort, that could be clearly understood and articulated if only they knew how. This misconception is not helped by the endless supply of people prepared to spout nonsense as to what they believe the artist was attempting to say. The almost inevitable consequence of this situation is that people may either feel as though they are being excluded from sharing in a few secret knowledge, or alternatively conclude that abstract painting is certainly all a sham. Either way, the effect is that many people tend not to feel well-disposed towards modern art or abstract paintings.
I certainly identify with Picasso’s remark so far as my very own paintings are involved. Should I enjoyed a specific message or perhaps a which means that I really could articulate in words, then I would articulate it in words – the painting could have no purpose. The complete reason for creating an abstract painting is it embodies a thing that only it could, in a way that should not be put into words. It is really not an essay it is a painting – it encompasses and expresses things in a language that is certainly unique to the medium of paint. For this reason we must not make an effort to ‘understand’ abstract paintings in the manner people sometimes feel they ought to be able to.
The viewer should never search for a clear narrative within an abstract painting – it is really not likely to tell a story, or make reference to an outside ‘subject’ in a similar manner that a figurative painting will. But that does not mean there is absolutely no meaning or no subject, or that abstract paintings cannot communicate with and move people. When asked about subject matter, the Abstract Expressionist artist Jackson Pollock said, “I am the niche”. Pollock’s statement is not only true, it is inevitable.
The experiences, personality, memories and mood from the abstract artist cannot help but be fed to the Large Black and White Wall Art in the event the artist approaches the task within an open and honest way. I do not require an outside subject or idea before I can produce a painting – I simply begin. The truth that I am just me with no-one else is why my work different to anyone else’s, and this is also true of all artists. The colours I select, the marks a make, the accidents I choose to depart, or to obliterate, these are all things i choose as a result of who I am.
If you were to present many different artists with similar basic design on a canvas and make them pick up a brush and develop the painting, the variations in whatever they would elect to do could be enormous. I actually have watched other abstract artists at the office on paintings and thought “I would never in a million years have chosen that colour and put it there.” Not because I believe that it is wrong or bad, but since they are who they really are and (to quote that other leading artist, Morrisey!) “only I am I”.
Abstract paintings – There are numerous great types of painting available, arising from a rich art history which has seen movement after movement. The word abstract art is usually used a blanket term to explain non-representational art – that is the lack of recognisable subjects. Abstract art was connected to the rise of modernism during the last century, getting into the mainstream with abstract expressionism in post-war art and still continuing to influence artists today.
What brought concerning the qualities we percieve in abstract art? The flattening of the artist’s canvas surface is certainly one major quality, as artists moved far from a convincing illusionism towards broader-minded thinking. With all the invention of photography releasing the artist from painting as a means of recording reality, they began seeing the canvas surface being an object in the own right, using the canvas as being a single, flat expansive surface. Paint ‘acted’ and affected the flat surface and begun to form its very own qualities based on the way it was handled. The paint could exhibit ‘personality’, it had their own dimensions and exposed a multitude of xsjvnx techniques we see in artwork from the last century. One of the main reasons artists began Large Custom Paintings within an abstract way was the opportunities for greater creativity. It allowed for a greater selection of expression and the growth of ideas that were not dependent on representing reality anymore.
