Fiction by its very definition is unreal. When we read a novel we are aware that the narrative and the characters in it are only a product of imagination of the author. When we view a movie we are aware that the characters are just acting their parts basically pretending to be somebody other than themselves. Still we are mentally affected by the turns and twists in the narrative. We laugh, weep with them, and also feel indignant towards the bad men. The adorable hero or heroine might be despicable in actual life and the villain may be a perfect gentleman, but we identify them using the characters they’re portraying. In essence for that short period we ourselves get transported into the imaginary world of the writer. Strangely enough this happens also with the author at least to a number of them. He or she travels through the same emotions while writing and perhaps later as well. Has what you have found added to your prior knowledge? In this sense fiction relies on fact and to this extent it represents another dimension of truth. Here of course we run into the philosophical problem of the exact meaning of reality. There are two diametrically opposite views – materialistic and spiritualistic. In accordance with the former only things which can be perceived through our senses are real, everything else is unreal. The latter maintains that there is just one ultimate fact from which we perceive comes out and everything that’s perceived is simply an illusion. We look at a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was obviously referring to the reality of the phenomenal world. The word illusion can have different connotations but in general it means perceiving something as different from what it is. So the presence of this thing is a necessity for illusion, it isn’t a mental construction. Imagination is purely a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with whatever really existent. Thus the connection between fiction and reality is entirely different from that between illusion and reality. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.

In a philosophical sense that the incredible world itself may be considered fiction. That is exactly what Shakespeare perhaps meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all women and men merely players”. We might as well think of everything in the world (space, time, matter) as gamers because everything has its entry and exit. We naturally run into the issue of saying what the stage is and who wrote the script. Shakespeare probably believed in God, strict determinism, also at the reality of earth, so he did not have this issue. Now it is generally believed that the universe also includes a beginning and will have an end. If the world is also a participant, are there multiple universes or does it come alone on the stage and then presents other players? But what’s the stage in this case? Quantum physics points to a single possibility. At extremely tiny scales of space and time there is a quantum emptiness that is not really empty but full of energy which is constantly changing itself to virtual particles as well as back. What remains after the end of the universe may be an infinite variation of the quantum emptiness filled with energy into which each of the matter has converted itself. This universal energy is the source of and background for everything.

It isn’t only a philosophical point. We spend a substantial part of our own life from the fictional universe. We muse about the things in future and dwell over the prior imagining what could have been. The imagination about the future is based on our hopes and aspirations and to some extent it is a positive in the sense that we are in a position to mold our future if we sincerely attempt. But musing over the past is a futile exercise because we all know for a fact that ‘what might have been’ is mere fantasy that never happened. Nevertheless it serves the exact same function as fiction in the point of view of amusement. We entertain ourselves by imagining how life would have been, knowing fully well that it has no reality whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense ago, at least the remote past, is fiction. At a certain sense history is fiction since it invariably includes the subjective bias of the author. What we know of Buddha and Jesus today is much more fiction than facts.
